It was 16C out today and I live by the Detroit River In Canada, took a nice 15km ride today.
I always rode bikes growing up, but being poor means when something breaks, its just broken now, and bikes were never expensive. My sister got my mongoose stolen when she didn't lock it up going to summer school, I loved that mongoose because it was so simple there was nothing really to break.
A fixed gear bike allowed me to cheaply and effectively get to college every day for 2 years through polar vortexes each winter. I used to beat my friends who were driving across town and and had to make a stop or two. Riding a fixed was my first taste of adult freedom for sure. I eventually got an 1980s Raleigh Canadian model with a fuckhuge frame with 650c wheels and Shimano 600 Arabesque shifters. They were nice but I know I would not be able to maintain them so I took them off and preserved them. I swapped all the parts from my $200 amazon fixed bike to the $200 Raleigh frame.
I hipster bike store was changing ownership and locations and selling off old stock and I got a Brooks B17 Short (womens) for $72 CAD (60% off plus native discount).
My bicycle is my most prized possession
