The spindle will easily outlast the bearings and so that is not a relevant mode of failure.
Cartridge units also make taper wear less significant as they greatly increase service intervals.
This is not to say that square taper units are perfect or superior, they're not, but the issues that face them now are different than in the JB era.
In 5 years when all the UN55s are gone it will be different again and square taper will make less sense, as the good in production cartridges (IRD) are twice as expensive.
