The earliest mtbs had triples.
22x34-esque gears are extremely useful for very steep loose climbs, which a serious mtber will encounter. The idea that simplifying gear patterns is only relevant to elite racing is just abject nonsense.
Personally i -like- 2x and 3x a lot, just not for modern mtbs.
and the only reason i bought up range was simply to refute that claim that 1x has less range. It doesn't.
Whether the spacing annoys you or not is more down to the kind of riding you do. Having wider spacing is not unequivocally a negative thing.
