Ekar offers extra gear in the high speed range, where it matters the most, and spreads the lower gears apart in comparison to the double.
Consistently switching between 50 and 34 is an endemic problem on the compact. If you do this, then you are overgeared. Try 46/34 or 46/30. Compacts suck. If I were forced to ride traditional double, I'd go for 53/39 + 13-something cassette anyways.
