The forecast for our 300 yesterday looked great, 20C light wind with a tailwind for the long north leg, chance of showers. But the weather ended up being quite shitty. 30+ km/h headwind for the north leg. Got rained on just before the turn, and the temperature never recovered after that staying between 6 and 10C rest of the day. Got rained on 2 more times. The brutal north wind vanished by time we turned south. But we had a decent push for much of the east leg, and the last 27 km south.
The guy I was riding with tends to fade toward the end of the rides lately so I pulled the entire day, and he did so the hills near the end were very slow. Going into the north wind we were only averaging about 18 km/h. Since I was pulling the whole way I used my HR monitor to maintain an even effort. On this 53 km leg I only stopped pedaling 3 times, 2 of them were for rain gear, and 1 was for the other guy to take a jacket off. Just intermittent cadence dips and I stood to stretch the legs.
