The twin section version simply has these cables between these sections. Each 'half' can actually operate as a separate unit. The only difference is lack of cabs. But some 'singles' were made out of a half of a double, if the other half crashed.
The sole reason why the double exists is that the double exists is that polish railway code forbade running unmanned locomotives. This has changed recently and private operators now actually run the singles in MU configuration. Pic related.
