So, picking up from last thread with the '90s MTB I want to recommission (
>>1486704) I'm bored and willing to spend a bit of money on the thing if only to have a project to work on. I'm very mechanically inclined and have a decent selection of tools, though I'd have to get bike-specific stuff.
I definitely want to replace the tires. The current ones are 26x1.95 tubeless. Should I switch to tubed? Should/can I change width? I want to ride on poor condition pavement and hard packed dirt/gravel trails, maybe a bit of softer dirt/sand but that isn't mandatory. I'm pretty clueless on tire choice but I'm guessing that maybe something more like a modern hybrid tire would make more sense than the knobby things on it now?
Also, the derailleurs and shifters seem to work but they're really crunchy after sitting for ~25 years, and I'm sort of interested in switching from grip shift to thumb levers. Is that something worth considering?
