>>1714144Mid-distance is usually 3 hours or less by Shinkansen (for Japan anway IIRC) since the Japanese has this "4-Hour Window" where they will prefer flying if it takes more than 4 hours on the Shinkansen, which is why Tokyo to Sapporo / Fukuoka is dominated by air travel (currently traveling to Hakodate by train needs 4 hours and 30 minutes at a minimum due to having to transfer so I believe air travel is favored there as well). I am curious as to how whether train travel would even make a dent into air travel once the Hokkaido Shinkansen is fully opened since it would still take around 5 hours to travel between those two cities.
