For commuting and everyday riding I'm a big fan of lace-up mtb shoes with SPD cleats that look like ordinary sneakers. This kind of shoe has been my everyday footwear for about a decade now, and I used to do a job where I walked around indoors on a hard surface all day (smooth tile/concrete), so no crunching like you get with uneven concrete. Most people never even notice unless they see the underside of my soles and spot the cleat, otherwise I think I've only had 2-3 people (who were cyclists and noticed the bike-brand names or logos) ask if I'm wearing cycling shoes without having seen the cleats in all that time.
I'm a big fan of Shimano shoes, though I've had a couple pairs of Lake and Specialized-branded shoes that have done good service. Only brand I've had a bad experience with was DZR, the pair I had from them fell apart in a matter of months.
