Because he is so heavily into cycling, it does actually make sense for him to buy expensive new and boutique stuff.
But, his cycling philosophy is egalitarian and he's trying to teach and encourage new riders, so promoting expensive new and boutique stuff goes directly against his aims.
BUT, a high quality used bike or smartly bought cheap parts for unracing is actually something that is only really straightforward for a seasoned unracer who is used to wrenching, and new riders will find it much easier consooming and 'modifying' their bike than actually doing real mechanical work on it, so what he's doing makes sense for him but doesn't make sense for his audience, and what they should be doing is something he could do but they couldn't do.
