All bicycle saddles before the 1950s were made of leather. They knew it worked and worked well. Plastic/foam alternatives are simply put, trash. A saddle must be made of leather to be even counted as a saddle IMO. Now I would have no problems with them creating synthetic or lab grown leather with the same properties. But it ain there yet
I personally wouldn't get a recumbent for comfort. A crank forward bicycle is also not as comfortable as all your weight is on your buttocks. At least a bent spreads it out over your whole upper body and a drop bar bike spreads some of it on your arms. Dutch granny bicycles share this upright position with crank forwards and from experience with the former I can tell your ass hurts much more than on a roadbike after 15 km, cause it gotta support all your weight.
