>>1607696Americans practically have an addiction to driving, like their addiction to fast food and pornography. Something about a cramped and miserable commute in their smelly cars listening to top 100 hits they hate along the ugliest pieces of infrastructure in history, the highway, just appeals to their masochistic need for self destruction.
Like the Puritan mortification of the flesh, the American seeks to cleanse himself of the sins of his day-to-day life— of being a westerner, using electronics and clothing built by slaves, eating food pumped with chemicals and poisons, wasting their lives jerking off and yelling on twitter— and he does this by making his life harder. He buys a poorly built suburban home that he will not be able to afford the upkeep on. He gorges himself on food. And he drives hours and hours to work. He harms himself because the world has told him that he is the master of his universe, that god is dead, that there is no society— the sins of the modern world wash over him, and what can be done but self-flagellate? His world are the 4 plasterboard walls that cocoon him, swaddle him like a child and choke him. What a pitiful, lonely, miserable existence for the American.
