i bought a bike that has gears and it looks like the derailues are fine but front shifter is stuck in middle gear and the rear shifter seems to be completely broken

im gonna go to the bike coop to replace them first but i would like to bother the volunteeers there as little as possible
they have a huge shifter parts bin. i was thinking of asking them to show me two easy shifters to buy and install and i can go home and youtube from there.
does this sound like a solid plan?
