I chose to get the bigger bag and check it because I felt a little weird about hoisting my bike over other people's heads. Call your airline ahead of time and ask about the bike in the overhead if you're anxious but chances are it's OK especially if you get one of those cheap ikea bags. Remember people take a lot of weird shit on the plane. In terms of the bike getting banged up by handlers, there's not too much that can get fucked up. One of my fenders got cracked but I don't really care
