The tire width argument going on in this thread is stupid - the number of variables that impact tire performance (and human perception of tire performance) are huge. It's a mistake to think that you can judge a tire on width alone.
FWIW I've ridden thousands of miles on 23mm tires and thousands of miles on 27mm tires and here's what I've learned:
1. tire construction and
2. getting your pressure right are vastly more important than having +/- 4mm of width
3. neither size is especially prone to blowouts or pinch flats unless you're a retard who can't install tires properly or can't avoid riding into deep potholes at speed.
4. wider is better on gravel
