I'm surprised that none of the brands have come out with a system using a shorter pitch chain for 1x yet, it would allow for smaller/lighter cassettes or you could keep the same cassette dimensions we currently have but without the ridiculously low number of teeth on the smallest cog.
Pic related is what using Shimano's old "10 Pitch" size chain would allow for - manufacturing would be a headache, but conceptually there's no reason it wouldn't work.
