They only make sense if you are regularly doing 20km+ daily
For most people mountain bikes are cheap and ubiquitous and a much comfier way to get around the city. It took me until i turned 30 to actually get a real road bike and finally "get it" and start smashing kilometers. I totally regret not doing it sooner. :(
one last note is people now also have an aversion to skinny tires thanks to their experience on POS fixed gears and its shitty culture.
