During the evening rush hour in Chicago, IL on February 4, 1977, an elevated train ("L" train) rear-ended another L in the Loop at Wabash and Lake. The trains derailed and came crashing to the ground from the elevated rail platform. 11 people died, and another 180+ were injured. The driver of the moving train was high on marijuana and overran a red signal. This is by far the most serious incident on Chicago's L system.
