i specced up a hardrock recently
got it from the dump, changed almost everything, tricolor crank, aliexpress SS bolts, LX derailer, aliexpress 'shimano' shifters, dia compe levers, stx calipers, rear rack turned into front rack with a top strut made for it, daiso japan basket, aliexpress grips, different seat and stem and bar.
total nonsense build with shit lying around. I don't even want it because it's too small for me. I managed to just service the wheels but the original parts mostly had no appeal whatsoever. On the other hand, lots of people, including often me looking back put way too much effort into modifying bikes and just make them look and ride stupid. Pic rel does ride pretty sweet though and i think it fits a useful niche.
I think the key is to just make sure you're improving it like servicing stuff and not just tryingn to change it.
