Gauge doesn't have anything to do with the weight that can be hauled. That has everything to do with the standard of the permanent way: bridges, rails, sleepers, etc. All of these contribute to the maximum axle loading of that route.
Gauge is far more of an influence on the bulk/volume of goods or speed of trains that can be hauled. You can't do HSR or double stacked containers on anything less than standard gauge, and even then you need well wagons to lower the centre of gravity. Broad gauges offer far more stability in that regard.
