Germany got refineries and chemical industry. Hydrogen is a byproduct. So this is one way to use it.
Northern Germany is mostly rural. There is passenger rail, but because low population density electrification never made much sense. In recent years many wind farms had been build in this region. Energy production went up, often exceeding demand. The idea is to use some of this cheap energy to produce hydrogen and use it to run trains.
These hydrogen trains are also clean and barely make any noise.

Germany got much chemical industry and Hydrogen is a by-product. Also most iLint trains will run in northern Germany where they got excess wind energy and use this to produce hydrogen. Running costs are expected to be cheaper. Commercial use is starting this year. So we will need to wait for at least 1 year to know fore sure.
