because that's actually a high performance tyre, designed for dirt jump racing. Rare for an obsolete size.
the grip is very good.
If you're more concerned about grip than speed go as wide as you can fit too. Then you can run lower pressures. Pic related is 2.3 at the front 2.15 at the rear.
It's still not going to be as good on rocks as a knobbly though but i'd rather ride slicks on trails than knobblies on the road for a mixed use bike.
I think both of those tyres you have are like decent 'city/hybrid' tyres and yeah you can do better.
