>>1314473>why?i lived by a gondola in the mountains with downhill runs for a job for a while
rented/borrowed a DH bike and did it a few times.
you're just on the brakes the entire time
as soon as you let go the speed gets out of control
so you can't even really flow, you constantly have to be slowing down
the feel of the heavy tank bikes is horrible they aren't nimble at all, they're dull, you don't really feel connected to the bike and you never pedal it's like walking in deep snow
I could ride the trails reasonably fast, and the harder ones slowly and do some of the drops and jumps but as soon as you get actually good at it what you're doing is just insanely dangerous and you're constantly on the edge and when you make mistakes you seriously hurt yourself.
I think you actually have to have some mental deficit to prefer it over other disciplines.
Give me a nice flowy backcountry XC trail or some singletrack any day. I don't mind riding up hills. I like riding down them, but DH is just stupid. I want mtbing in a scenic place where I can stop and smoke a joint and not have that mean i'll send my bike off a cliff because my reflexs go down a bit.
