The 3 speed Shimano nexus (even the 20 year old ones) are fantastic. They are what's used on my old Bridgestone mamachari bike and it's pretty much the ideal commuting setup.
People say they're expensive but you can easily find a bike with 3 speed nexus for really cheap even new here. I simply bought a relatively more expensive Bridgestone because everything is made of stainless steel and built like a tank+ it also has a belt drive.
