Honestly, the other pic's buildings are just mediocre, not a horrible and long-lasting style in architecture. THIS SHIT, on the other hand, is unbearable and constantly gets plopped in the middle of nowhere off the sides of highways. Developers make them because it's dirt cheap and they can still pawn it off as "luxury living" to people who can't actually afford (or understand the concept of) luxury living.
The worst part is that this shit isn't isolated to Michigan. All over the US architectural firms are spewing these obnoxiously colorful designs around and cities desperate for decent affordable housing to get hipsters and poors to stay in the city are eating it up.
