A hybrid is a shitty road bike
* Has an upright body posture that is comfy-ish for people who are unfamiliar with bikes, but places all the weight on the butt and none on the hands, leading to soreness and pain on longer rides. This is why you usually see them paired with huge "gel" saddles (that don't actually solve the problem).
* Flat bars, which allow for a single hand position, also leading to fatigue and pain on moderately long rides.
* The upright posture is super non-aero
A hybrid is a shitty mountain bike
* Super upright posture requires a short top tube, leading to a very short front-center
* Pretty steep headtube for a mountain bike
* skinny tires
* If it has a "shock", it's probably just a spring that feels nice a boing-y on the showroom floor, but has little-to-no damping to actually keep the tire on the ground and increase traction availability on rough terrain.
Finally, because everyone hates hybrids, they're really only marketed to people who don't know any better, and are generally spec'd with shit-tier components. Also usually aluminum frames (because cheap), and super heavy so they're strong enough to not crack in half under lardasses.
A hybrid is fine for, like, riding to class, getting groceries, and general short-distance utilitarian transportation. It's not something for someone who genuinely enjoys riding a bike for fun, because they are the anti-fun.
