That huge nose used to house a highly advanced automated gangway connection. Many intercity trains here split at a certain station with both halfs continueing to a different destination, and conventional gangway connections took too much time and manpower to couple. So in the 70's the Dutch Railways developed these trains that coupled and connected themselfs, so combinations could be split and rejoined in less than 30 seconds with a push on a button:
