and be sure your seat is high enough
so that your legs have enough room straiten out
once set up right you should be able to stand on one pedal and then rock backwards onto the seat in one motion
and have maybe half an inch of spare space between you and the seat, so that as you pedal your legs take up some of your weight
rather than haveing to fully rely on the seat holding you up
if you can find a jym that has a cycle machine this will allow you to practice safely
try pedaling backwards as this will teach you how to move the pedals sideways over the dead spot near TDC and BDC
most importantly of all is not to strain your knees by trying to use sudden force to accelerate
every gear ratio has a rate at witch it can be bought up to speed, you can slowly use your body weight, dont rely only on your muscles
and the nature of a 180 degree crank is such that the speed of your foot will not be the same though out the pedal stroke
pay attention to your legs they will inform you of the best speed to go
