I personally think the presence of "road plus" is more than anything an industry reaction to the steadily rising popularity of Jan Heine's publication that has been championing 650B french randonneurs for a very long time. Only you can't just present old French touring bicycles to a market that's been conditioned for decades to desire racing technology; so you rebrand it as a conversion option for full-carbon CX bikes and roll it into the tail end of the Gravel Grinder campaign.
