I have been going via bicycle from my house to the subway station to go to work for a few years now. It's a 4.5-5 mile trip. I basically haven't really improved my performance on the return trip at all for over a year.
Pic related is the stats for the trip. Left is the entire trip, right is the last 2 miles to my house.
It takes me between 23-28 minutes to complete this trip and I average usually in the 11.x mph for the entire trip. For the second part of it, I'm usually only in the high 6s to low/mid 7s mph and still have to always stop twice for about 30 seconds each at the level parts or I feel like I'll throw up.
Usually it isn't a problem, and I'm frequently going up the hills at the same speed or faster than even the freds in full racing gear on their carbon fiber bikes (i bike in a t shirt, shorts, sneakers, backpack), but there's this old Asian guy I've encountered a few times who is in this big mountain bike (I ride a road bike) who goes up the last hill way faster than me and never has to stop, I don't get how he goes so fast up it and it humiliates me that some old guy in a big heavy mountain bike wastes me like that
