Lignite produces three times as much CO2 as the average energy source for electricity. It is absolute shit even compared to black coal. Add to that all the additional cost from ferrying it back and forth. You need three times as much lignite to get the same amount of energy as with black coal.
Surface mining absolutely wrecks both environment and settlements in the area. Thousands of people have to relocate and settlements older than a millenium are completely destroyed. Habitats for endangered and not-yet-endangered species are destroyed.
Based activists have occupied and disabled excavators and cargo trains in the area multiple times. There is also a permanent treehouse camp at Hambacher Forst in Germany (lower middle-left on the map), the inhabtiants of which are attacked by cops sponsered by big energy company RWE on the regular.
