- number of individual rideable gear combinations with non overlapping transmisson ratios
- total possible transmission range
The ratio value represents how many revolutions the rear wheel does per 1 crank turn.
Red cells mean the theoretic gear combinations cannot be used due to chain angle.
I found that I have more individual rideable gear combinations (15 vs. 13) and an equal total transmission range on my 2x11 roadie. (3.4 range width)
My conclusion was that 3 chanrings are pointless because you get the same range or better with 2.
You would get the same range width by removing the middle of the 3 chanrings on the cross bike.
I agree with you that 11 speed is too much though and 9 or 10 is peak sanity for the reasons you mentioned.
There are a lot of hills in my area so I need a broad range, uphill and downhill.
