it's not really fair to compare modern purpose built road bikes against cheap converted vintage road bikes
we've had similar arguments before, some deranged anons insisting that 3 speed internal gear hubs are so damn good, but in reality they are found on BSO dutch bikes and the spread between ratios is high and the internal gear hub itself weighs a lot
