it was not feasible to have this level of CNC machining on a budget component 15+ years ago. the phil wood chainring cost 10 times as much, it's discontinued and it's 144mm BCD 1/8" while i'm looking for 130mm BCD 3/32". the litepro chainring is much thicker than a typical 3/32" chainring to accommodate the narrow-wide feature while having a lot of material removed to save weight. it's a very efficient design and there is no real drawback to the narrow-wide teeth, just skepticism from people who aren't familiar with it because of how new it is.
