Take an old Raleigh Lenton if you're in the U.K., those are basically Raleigh Sports but made of 531. You can get them for a hundred pounds. Mostly alloy parts, too. Replace the crank and parts as-needed. Great riding geometry, and has an internal gear hub.
Or get a Linus if you're in the States.
Or a Papillionaire if you're in Australia.
Same principle in theory.
Full chromoly frames > Most other things. A proper brooks leather saddle. Something that has the handlebars positioned higher than the saddle (or at least even with).
