It was in free communication with the seas for hours, and then when the flooding was bad enough it made some cargo float free and bust open the fire main in the hold. All of the free surface effect in the middle of a hurricane is a death sentence. It might have even made them lose the plant, but regardless all that plus no way to keep way on sent her to the bottom.
