I can understand it being confusing, because stations that are within walking distance of each other may not connect to each other. And even then, lines with branching routesmean you need to keep an extra eye open, to make sure you're getting on the correct train; because simply getting on a train on the right line, heading in the right direction, doesn't guarantee you'll arrive at your intended destination.
It's good that the ticket machines are relatively easy to use for tourists - 'press your flag', 'press where you want to go', 'gib monies LEL', 'take paper slip' - but I can completely understand why people could find it intimidating.
Plus the zone system is there to obfuscate the true cost of getting around, rather than charging by distance required, but hey ho.
