been cleaning stuff today
found a steel rigid mtb thrown out, dusty but otherwise in complete working condition, not crazy dirty.
I decided to service the rear wheel and based off what i saw inside the hub seals get an idea of how used the bike was. Turns out its just old but hardly worn. The grease had polymerised and was quite crusty. The cups are spotless, the cones have their plating worn but have no notches or chips. I couldnt be bothered finding my stash of new balls so the old ones went back in. I gave the cassette a good scrub with a wire brush but didnt bother dissasembling it into individual rings so theres still a fair amount of dirt in it, whatever. Couldnt be assed getting into the freewheel so i just picked out the freewheel seal, used a toothpick to work as much of the old grease out as i could be bothered, before working new grease in - i used some car wheel bearing grease i had on hand which is quite fluid which i prefer for hubs.
also picked up a lot of crusty weinmann caliper brakes and levers recently, since i was looking for a lever to go with some weinmann centerpull brakes i bought on a whim a while back. Dissassembled and cleaned everything in kerosene.
i have a theft deterrent idea for the rear wheel of this bike, pics to follow
