Lets see, from my experience:
Walking: Good luck getting anywhere if you are moving more than 100 meters.
0 to 4-5km: Bike is ALWAYS faster
+5km: Car is faster unless we are talking really stupid traffic issues

Biking is essentially about moving 15-30km/h, which means you can cross rather waste distances if there is no hinder to your movement.
I.e stupid terrain, stupid intersections, etc.
That said, I live in a Oil Snow country. Norm is to either bike on sidewalk or road, but generally accept that you will see dangerous drive by if you stay on the road.
And thats just how it is. But generally footpaths are better planned than car roads, and straighter. And since parking is a piece of shit, its neat.
