>>1423527The city problem: If you want to avoid the city you will have to ride in the mountains. If you want to ride in the flat, you'll be in cities. The Japanese do not seem to like when you are a dirty bike tourist in their city. They are in work mode. They are all very clean and smell nice. We got the feeling that a lot of them thought of us as homeless. we didn't wear cycling clothes and my bike doesn't look fancy. If you see people in national parks or recreation areas they are much cooler. They seem to understand and respond to you. Japan was very lonely for us. Not many were willing or able to communicate. I think eating breakfast on the sidewalk is a big taboo. Many states and looks of disgust.
The cities are endless. ~50 miles across or just a continuous stretch. Kyoto was the easiest to navigate, but doing 50 miles through the city would take all day. Start, stop, start, stop. I used Google maps and that was awful. It still works, but just not great in the city. No bike route. If you pick a walking route it will make you take many turns down side roads and driving is all expressway.
