At the time my outer layer was a wool military sweater, so moisture would pass through the inner layers and freeze into frost on contact with the cold air. I used a painting respirator to keep my glasses from fogging while allowing me to completely cover my face by having a neck tube with a hole in it for the respirator. Not very pleasant since my nose still runs in the cold but I can't blow it, so a mess of snow and drool drips out the bottom of the mask. I can't be bothered to go to those lengths anymore.
