At 5:30 AM on February 10, 2017, a 52 year old woman drove her Opel Meriva onto the light rail tracks at Sudbrackstraße station, Bielefeld, Germany. She later alleged she was "blinded by light", ignored several warning signs, and made a left turn off the road onto the tracks. The car lost a side mirror in a small collision with the station platform and then travelled into the rail tunnel. The driver stopped after a little over 600 meters into the tunnel, left through an emergency exit, and called the police. The fire brigade recovered the vehicle after several hours of work, which necessitated rail replacement service by bus. The involved personnel expressed bewilderment at the incident. The driver had to pay €35 in fines to the police, an estimated €2000 to the fire brigade, and around €4800 to the local transport authority Mobiel. She could keep her driving license, however.
