IIRC they have backup train that can be used when the other trainset went into maintenance and when it's busy time they would use both
At past there were also Sunrise Yume service that run during busy time using backup trainset down to Shimonoseki/Hiroshima but it have been discontinued 10 years ago.

But because that track session's speciality it seems like it is not uncommon for passengers booked on tickets to Kotohira being requested to change trains in the middle instead. (Actually, was it even resumed now after the flooding last month?)
