I've done big climbs on gravel with standard road gearing where the road surface was firm, but I've also ridden/walked up roads so rutted and loose that you doubt that anyone could ride up them without a full suss bike and a 22:50 gear. Arguing about gearing is pointless because needs vary from rider to rider and place to place.
