A little over 12 months after the North Shore Line went out of business, the Chicago Transit Authority (with federal funding) took over the southernmost 5 miles of the Skokie Valley Route and converted it into one of the first "light rail" projects. What was originally supposed to be a 2-year demonstration project ended up being very popular, and it survives today as the Yellow Line. Competitor railroads and NIMBYs have both worked hard to ensure that it's never extended back further north.
