56 (medium) would be bad but also not impossible

that bike is like a 50. You can comfortably go 1 size down, 2-3 sizes is possible. 5-6 sizes is just silly. Not to mention that it wouldn't even be worth it if it fit him because it's a garbage bike to begin with.
