The oil crisis doesn't even come close to being the root cause. If the USA had as much backbone in 1973 as it did in 1923, we would have considered OPEC's actions to be an act of war and rightfully glassed the capitals of every Gulf State before annexing them and securing their oil production for ourselves. The fact that we didn't do exactly that only proves that all had already been lost by then.
