Trolley systems are really complex, trolley switches are notoriously difficult to maintain, and the lines are very unflexible once installed. With battery busses, you can just plop some charging stations at the end of you line, readjust the turnaround time and have it operate like a conventional line. I agree that BEVs are mostly a meme though, especially for many personal uses.
