>>1649776>Back in the 80s-90s, did they even make cyclocross bikes yet?CX has been a thing for over a century, so CX-specific bikes were always being made here and there, and started appearing as a mass market category in the US in the 80s, Europe in the 70s, I think. They were very similar to road bikes, but with cable bosses on the top of the top tube so you didn't gouge your shoulders when carrying the bike over something, lower gearing, and cantis. I think that it was the 90s when you started seeing higher BBs, tho that's no longer a thing.
>Would some of the more touring-oriented road bikes maybe be a good option?"Sport touring" was the gravelmeme back in the day, yeah, and a lot of those bikes showed up at CX events. The Bianchi Eros and Miyata 610 /615 are good examples. Miyata was had a few CX-specific models like the Alumicross in the late 80s. A well-kept one in my size would be an automatic buy.
And now that I'm looking at old Miyatas I kinda want to get this old Omnium just for the ALUMINUM decal. Miyata was so cool. Shame that they're just a shitty Merida brand now.
