messenger bags are a pita to open while riding, since they can slide around
when you hit bumps they also jump up which is annoying af if you live in an area with bad roads
handlebar bags are pretty easy to open while riding, and since they're in front of you, you can just reach forward
they also make some that can quickly unclip from the rack and have a carrying strap if you like being able to bring it with you off the bike easily
also, handlebar bags don't make your back and shoulder all sweaty
